And you've done this a number of times throughout your career and your life. And I think what happened in this year, in so many ways, was a great splash of ice water thinking like, "Boy, we got a long way to go." Even though you think youre such a great brand, there are a hundred things that happen in New York a day that youre one of the elements. We had Chris Middleton and Giannis involved in it kind of conceptually, and really fun conversations with Giannis brother Costas had just won for the Lakers the year before. In 2014, Bucks President Peter Feigin lost his father to congestive heart failure. How do we get the people to try and start the journey to professionalize and really build a gold standard operation. Peter: did active, to get in. My fantasy, I had two fantasies growing up. My wife is like, What are you doing? I dont know what Im doing!. Sometimes it goes up for judicial review to make sure the run is harmonious, Lee said. We had a, if you remember, we had a COVID extended season. Lee, 50, has worked to keep in shape by doing yoga and shooting hoops in his backyard. Ive got two kids Im working as, Id say a consultant, helping to put together a business plan. And theyve got it on. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think it's part of the culture and kind of down from ownership, like you're going to stand for something or you're going to stand for nothing. Ive never seen less arguing in a serious pickup game, said Adam Keefe, a former N.B.A. It really is. His rise from recruiter's president, handing out parking tickets in the Buck's lot, working for social justice in the epicenter of the global movement, and his unique leadership style. And I think the balance is really, really tough because you know what an NBA season is. Peter: Start from, yeah, start from the beginning. Feigin would not be able to make his global pitch without his star. And then I think on a parallel track, youre really building an infrastructure. Then she just starts laughing. It would be great if you represented me and kind of went down there and looked at the business for a second." Peter: Well, its having like Ive always said, people talk about their personal board of directors and what that is and I had the advantage and still have the advantage of my mother being the best consultant you could possibly have. You build this infrastructure and skill set that is geared toward a championship. And also, obviously some additions with Jrue Holiday and other great players we have this year. One Saturday, they gathered with some of their other pals including dAmboise, who had been playing hoops with them for years and The Run was born. Peter Feigin: These are all massive, huge, systematic problems for generations that we've got to chip away from every day. So, how do you navigate the ship through waters you've never been through before? I never wanted to be that guy with the goggles and the knee brace and the tucked-in shirt being like, Hey! Peter: Married. You start and now talk about the major, like you said, you got a great human capital person, you got a great CFO. Well, a year ago, yesterday, we went to zero. Its really important and youve got to take a real responsibility. You miss throwing that pass. Whether youre building an arena, whether youre building infrastructure or a team, whether youre dealing with the same problems, it is really powerful to end up with, when you come up with conflict and problems or you need solutions, or you need smart brains to be able to pick up the phone with 5, 10 like-minded people who are dealing with the same stuff. John: Its fascinating you say that. Enjoy the chicken tenders. Well, I think again, it kind of goes back to we thought we were this awakened organization because our percentages looked good. That automatically and having him sign for the next five years, that gives you this springboard that we think. That's like, that's today's kind of like, "What are we focused on?". He's Peter Feigin, president of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks, and in the nearly five years of living in the city he has come to Gee's Clippers so that Gaulien Smith, a black man, can tame his head. How do we talk beyond just coming to Milwaukee, but how do we do business together? Peter Feigin: I think we have a good structure with Jon Horst, who's really our GM and kind of really runs the basketball day-to-day. We stopped operating. Peter: Weve been married like a hundred years. You had to kind of build the equity by saying what you're going to do and then doing it. You can always have free coffee. But no matter how skilled the player, new members are included on a probationary basis. I can come up with a solution, we can figure it out somehow, some way if youve got the right people around you to do it. John: Thats so great. You know I got my sources. When Khris was a rookie, I said, "Do you know whose jersey you wearing?" Peter: Well, my dad was at Brooklynite so we were Mets and Jets. Jan 16th, 2016 by Mayor Tom Barrett. Peter Feigin: And I think I kind of have this delusion that there's nothing that I can be a part of, that we can't accomplish. Were going to appreciate the hell out of you. I think engagement and investment in the community and social responsibility is like a big deal. Peter: to anybody I thought was of great skill and value for selfish reasons to feel good. How do we keep driving? A lot of fun. Brought on by Owner Marc Lasry as a sales and marketing guru, Feigin has helped the Bucks go from the basement. I played soccer and basketball, not overly blessed with athleticism. So, he's at the All-Star game and I literally said, "It's too bad we're not on Zoom," because I'm holding these. It has just been introduced for iPhones, but we are working on the Android version! So when I talked to her, I said, hey, Ive got to tell you, first of all, the executive committee at Saturday morning run says, this is a good thing. And it was a fantasy. Number one, were in the middle of COVID. Its hundreds of rings. I mean, that's like, I mean, literally over and over and over again, relentlessly, the whole team to get it done. And nobody's going to question how great Milwaukee is." He simplified the housing market for me. "We have a. Peter: Yeah, so I think its here and I think its all about the customization, right. Here's your Asian Americans. I've got two brothers, my mom, my other family member. Its gotten through its first iteration to see where it is. Feigin can do all the PR he wants, but the most effective pitch to get fans into the new arena is out of his hands. Talk about your organization, community involvement, and the impacts that you get to make both positive and otherwise. Its kind of like the unwritten rule: Dont argue about anything. Then, I would literally leech myself. What did your dad do for a living? But the honesty of saying you dont know all the answers and figuring out what the solutions are is probably like pretty powerful in the way things work. I also listen, I thought, and my parents thought both my brother and I were as you can imagine before ADD was actually diagnosed, Peter: for kids our age and stuff, because its still be on impulsive, relentless, like, [inaudible]. How does that boat go? But it was one of these kind of diversion life lessons that you don't know where life takes you and just take total opportunity for it. But for us, it's kind of like, "How do we make an equal playing field? Peter Feigin readily admits that, as president of the Milwaukee Bucks, he lives in the fantasy world of professional sports. That was, Peter: That was it. And we'll get into the twin in a little bit. But, you want to be in a place where people care about you? His brother and Lee were just as excited. It's really best of class.". Im probably like someone who gives everything away. Back when the Feigins (now teenage) sons were much younger, Lasry suspected that Peter or Dan would give them a secret signal to scamper onto the floor if their team was losing. How does it really work? And how did that all come about? If you have a partner in life, they'd better be a teammate. The Bucks are one of the 17 teams that is competing in the new NBA 2K League, a necessary decision in Feigin's mind. Peter Feigin: They made it really simple. And I believe in my heart that the Bucks were real leaders in that moment. Peter: got to do what youre going to say and say what youre going to do and really be substantial. I have an identical twin brother who happens to still be in New York and runs a private school called Trevor Day School. Our dinner table conversation. And remember, betting on yourself is the secret to your success. There's got to be solutions. I actually read a whole story, theres a whole article, Peter, about your ring. Today I'm talking with Peter Feigin, President of the MBA's Milwaukee Bucks and formerly Vice-President of Marketing for the New York Knicks, and Director of Marketing at Six Flags. John: Yeah. Going back into the past is something I wanted to ask you about. Peter: is youve got to have so many opportunities and different variations to really, to really acquire different types of fans. What a great thing. Shout out to Sarah, who is I think one of the best assistants out there. And the task at hand here is like the more successful we are on the court, the more successful we are on the business, the more opportunity we will have to do other things. It's like how do we, between us, like as you know. With a B? Woodhouse recalled asking him. Peter Feigin: Yeah. Where does your ring sit? The good news is it's pretty small shop. You cant imagine. And to think it all started at a private school in New York City. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think I moved, I graduated from college and had a job, had an opportunity for a job that was kind of nuts. It was important for us for our players, for our organization, for the city to stand up. I think Wes Edens and Aaron Rodgers had been friends for awhile. I encourage it, and selfishly, its a fun way to network and deal with people. Talk a little bit about where you even grew up, how you even got here. It was one of these terrible times where, when youre in pro sport, you book all your revenue, you do all your dirty business before tip-off and if they didnt have somebody to run the business in July, it wouldve been a disaster and they were stuck with me and thats my road to success. John: Now, you married, what, wife is a native New Yorker? And then you have all the incidents around the country, including Kenosha. But talk about that dynamic leading through that. He continues to build civic and business relationships around town through face-to-face interaction. Michael Red: The family, I know, that's big for you in that culture and what you try to create as a culture is family. Talk about that process. People will ask me all the time like, "How would you respond these times, Mike, as a player?" Talk about that nuance because like you were saying, from the outside in, you could say all the players have it made. We screw around a hell of a lot, but let me tell you, if one of our guys was in trouble, if we need to circle the wagons, if they need advice on evaluating something they're doing, they know that it's extremely objective, it's immediate, and that's what we do here. Peter Feigin: So, my job is pretty simple, like how do I build the trust with them? John: Right. I really hope I get to meet you in the future. I asked every good question, every dumb question you could possibly imagine to really learn. I thought Id hit the jackpot, Feigin said. And there is no magic wand that kind of changes this in six months. But there are also long-range shooters who work in retail sales and small forwards who direct nonprofits, photographers and writers, students and teachers. So, people talk about business, it wasn't a slow beat. The one thing that's been impressive for me, being a part of the family, is seeing how you all embrace the city. There's no way that the reverence, the likeability and kind of the coolness of the Milwaukee can't be a team and a city that the whole world cheers for in such a big way. What advice can you share backwards to the young people out there that want to live your journey or something close to it? I played soccer and basketball, not overly blessed with athleticism. Michael Red: Well, I love you back. If Im 25 and struggling to get up and down the court because I was out with my friends, and these guys who are running companies are showing up and playing ball, then I have no excuse. Peter: We took the lumps and then, yeah, I had my dream job when I was in my mid-20s as in Madison Square Garden like running marketing for the New York Knicks and I thought I could have died and gone to heaven and thats, I lived breathed in the Knicks basketball and Ranger hockey, it was the greatest. Lasry, 60, had already become less of a regular presence in recent years. How do we rethink it? Donations to the school can be turned into compensation. We were sitting brainstorming like, how do we keep people employed? How do we think about marketing around the world? John: In terms of watching the young generation now come up, has NIL and the advent of NIL do you believe thats going to have a positive or negative effect as you continue to recruit players in the future? The future for the Bucks, championship, championship, championship, and obviously getting fans back at the games. Heading into his ninth year as President of the Milwaukee Bucks, and fifth year as President of the world-class Fiserv Forum, Peter Feigin brings more than two decades of dynamic corporate leadership to Milwaukees sports and entertainment scene. Michael Red: Talk about the process of redeveloping downtown and one who's so in love with Milwaukee and it's like a second home to me, living there for so many years. Kevin Draughon, a former student at Trevor Day School, drove on Dan Feigin, who runs the pickup games on Saturdays at the schools gym. And that's kind of the way I think about everything. That's actually a step up from the orange vests and hard hats he's been wearing in Milwaukee, constantly checking on the construction of the Wisconsin Entertainment and Sports Center, the non-branded name of the arena. I would say again, from our owners, from day one, they understood that from how are we stewards of the brand of the Bucks and how are we examples in the community? Michael Red: It's becoming that and has become that. But the overarching is how do we maintain kind of championship caliber excellence, like across the business and across the team. What would you be doing if you just couldnt be doing this? So I'm never a great example of where the balance is and what the cut off is in everything because it's all one big puzzle to me. Peter Feigin: So, that was and sort of weird comfort in that everybody in the world was going through it. But it was so much fun. That was one of these monumental, incredible, awesome times to get it done. Then you mirror that off the court. "I did kind of the 'Dick Cheney.' He ends up being a generational player like you couldnt, if you were writing a Disney movie, which they have now written and now produced, it would be the fodder for a Disney. And they all live kind of the job we all live kind of each other's lives. Peter: Yeah. Unfortunately, I probably haven't changed mentally or emotionally since we met, but she's my teammate. Peter: Yeah. So, the end of the story is I was responsible to hire CEO, so I got two or three candidates I knew Mark and Wes would hate and they couldn't hire them because they didn't like something about them. Does he pass enough? My father happened to pass away probably within a couple months and very close with Mark and Wes, who basically at that time said, Well, you now have to really consider this and do this. And at the time, I always say, I was their last hope because of the timing of the acquisition. Where does it sit? We have large sections that you never think about 10 years ago that people hang out at a bar, never have a seat, never, standing room only. But you would say I kind of got to play through high school college with just grit and will and really like persistence and relentlessness. Whether it was in sports or somewhere else Id probably look to lead an opportunity for a turnaround or a startup. You really need to build equity and build trust especially in the Midwest youve. Although he has made a career of being in high-powered executive positions, he doesn't necessarily dress the part all the time. How does that, and then, with that also because this harkens back, Im old enough, youre old enough even, we remember the Michael Jordan era, he was the greatest player in the world back in his Again, you not only have one of the greatest players ever to play on the planet, but youve also created this culture of retention. We deal, and weve had some meetings with our friends at the Badgers of the University of Wisconsin as they create a collective, weve certainly been tracking kind of whats going on. Id worked for the New York Knicks. Michael Red: So, I did some research and so, the sources got back to me. Marc Lasry, the co-owner of the Bucks, joined The Run when his sons were students at Trevor. Its rotating cast includes bankers, lawyers and high-powered television executives. Peter Feigin: No. And then I think the most incredible thing, which I can't see happening in a major metropolitan area again, is we were able to acquire 30 acres of contiguous land. Just go beyond the scoreboard and championships that you guys get to make in your community, that you are proud of, Peter. And at the core, I've always been a sales and marketing guy. So, for all the listeners, I played in Milwaukee for 11 years over a decade and had an incredible time there. So, it's a little bit kind of nuts and delusional to go through thinking like you can kind of accomplish or solve or get anything done, but it's kind of the way I've kind of attacked life in a big way. Talk about having arguably the greatest player in the world on your team. It's like it really is part of your life. And a diverse community gives us diverse thought, gives us better outcomes. We happen to have like the largest kitchen in the state of Wisconsin. Our expectation is to win a championship. You start with whats the goal? Thats the relentless, thats the difference I think of what success is. Now youve been to the top of the mountain. That everybody understands their benefits for their health insurance, that we're getting psychological health, that we're feeding people in the community, that we are on top of not just marching for social justice, but that we're dealing with, police reform, that we're resourcing our players. Peter Feigin: Khris Middleton, as you can imagine, nobody understands that players have been having to get COVID tested twice a day and you got to come into our training center and we have parking spaces. The Bucks are currently in position to make the playoffs for the second straight year and third time in four years since Feigin and friends took over. This is a human business. The whole world is on that balance, so part of what we haven't really talked about much is our culture here. But while it is nice to connect, Kearns described the calls as artificial sweetener. It is not the same. Thats just what a joy. My son was a freshman at San Joaquin Memorial High School when Brook Lopez was there and he played with Brook under coach Pat Giles. Michael Red: So, the league, obviously, is halted with COVID and then in the middle of all of that, you have the George Floyd issue. We closed our restaurants down. The people part is always tough. I wanted to be in marketing in sales. Peter Feigin: I mean, my mouth just watered. Peter Feigin: I'm not a good example of life balance, because I kind of blend them in such a big way that my kids, my brothers, my mother, my wife, they're all a part of it. I think if nothing else, it changes the awareness, the sophistication, and the business operations of the way players will position themselves and the way theyll market themselves. Everybody at ball was just, you got to move, go leave now. And that's what we try to do. Kearns has been shooting at an abandoned hoop that he discovered behind a train station in Connecticut. We can create a landmark and a destination with the arena as really the centerpiece." So, we continue to want to make this a place where players are like, "Shit, I've never been treated like this.". We had weekly calls. Peter: Oh, my goodness. We've developed about 75% of it and people are living here, working here, and playing. Peter Feigin: Michael, like I said, anytime, anywhere.
